At the same time, biology, zoology, anatomy, physiology, medicine, architecture, engineering, as well as science branches are also included. Physical anthropology benefits from biology, genetics, medicine, chemistry, biochemistry, physics, geology, geography, climatology, botany and radiology.
Physical Anthropology examines the morphological, anatomical and physiological structure and characteristics of human. It examines the structure and characteristics of human at the level of population. Morphological, anatomical and physiological structure and features responsible for the emergence of genetic structure and all environmental factors are reviewed in detail. For this reason, Physical Anthropology includes many sub-sciences and techniques. Social Anthropology in the Anthropology Department
Social anthropology is a social discipline that seeks to understand the social and cultural diversity of human societies that are intertwined with their geographical, political, historical and economic realities. Apart from the historical narratives produced by travellers and missionaries as a consequence of coming across with “bizarre” societies and evolutionary approaches framed under the influence of positivism, dominant scientific paradigm of XIXth century, contemporary emergence of social anthropology can be positioned into the beginning of the XXth century in the name of the founder Bronislaw Malinowski and his invention of unique ethnographic method defined by participatory observation and direct investigation of anthropological communities. Later, with long-term ethnography, there has been a huge amount of ethnographic data accumulated on the societies all around the world and the discipline, Social Anthropology, has gradually gained a theoretical saturation through which it has a significant role in the discussions of the theoretical paradigms like functionalism and structuralism. Social Anthropology has firstly focused on the indigenous communities that were formulated as if they were small-scaled, less populated and partly isolated from the rest of the world. The research scale of social anthropology today has expanded to the extent that it now covers urban life as well. The locally oriented emic approach that lies at the root of the discipline is, however, still at work in approaching this expanded realm and produces influential formulations on the social relations, issues, attitudes, emotions and meanings occurred in urban societies. Social anthropology is, above all, an ethnographic and data-driven discipline. It is based on long-term participation to the life of people and the construction of one-to-one relations with them. Through its method, social anthropology hopes to reach indirect data generated by the local codes of the society studied.
Social Anthropology in Ankara University seeks to provide its students from bachelor, master and doctorate programs with the ability to design and implement an ethnographic fieldwork and to teach them the relevant theories and concepts of the discipline. In this context, the department focuses on the disciplinary and interdisciplinary issues related to the social life such as kinship, religion, political organization, language, medicine, material culture, gender, art, and law. It also aims to provide the students with the ability to record oral, written and visual material resources and, above all, to work on social anthropological data. Raising awareness on students for the existence of social discrimination and inequality patterns based on gender, power, ethnicity, belief and class and for the necessity of unbiased and sensitive approach to human diversity and social problems is a significant practical aim sought in social anthropology department. The current faculty members of social anthropology are conducting field researches in different geographical areas in rural and urban scales, taking part in various social anthropology research projects and contribute to the field at national and international levels through their publications.
