The Department of Prehistoric Archeology is a discipline that searches, examines the oldest period of Archaeology and develops thesis. The aim of the program is to educate archaeologists who specialize for prehistoric archeology science. Students who have completed their master’s degree have knowledge about specific subjects in Prehistoric Archeology and have the ability to recognize and define the material that is a subject of Prehistoric Archaeology, make techno-typological evaluations and to be able to do original scientific studies. The occupational employment areas of the graduates are the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, museums or private museums connected to Ministry, municipalities, universities and MTA General Directorate.

Department Of Archaeology / Prehistoric Archaeology Abaout Doctorate Program

The Department of Prehistoric Archeology is a discipline that searches, examines the oldest period of Archaeology and develops thesis. The aim of the program is to educate scientists who are experts in the field of Prehistoric Archeology and who are able to teach at academic level and are ready for to be a teaching fellow. The students who complete their PhD education have special knowledge on specific subjects in the field of Prehistoric Archeology and graduate with the ability to make and conduct prehistoric excavations and surveys, to conduct original scientific studies and to teach in higher education institutions. The occupational employment areas of the graduates are the museums, municipalities, universities, MTA General Directorate and Provincial Private Administrations.

Classical Archaeology

Classical Archaeology mostly includes Ancient Period, which covers Greek and Roman civilizations. Classical Archaeology Department includes courses on Minoan in Crete (BC 2800 – 1050), Mycenaean civilization in mainland Greece (BC 1600-1200) and Proto-Geometric – Geometric period (BC 1050-700), Archaic period (BC 650-480), Classical period (BC.480-330), Hellenistic period (BC 330-30), Roman Empire period (BC 30 – AC 395) archaeology of Aegean Civilizations mainly Western Anatolia. Several pieces from Anatolia and other places are visually demonstrated in courses about Ancient history architecture and sculpture, ceramic, small antiques and coins.

Protohistory and Archeology of the Near East

One of the most important processes in the history of mankind is the transition to the first periods of history with the transition to settled life and writing. Besides the history of culture given in the courses, the subjects are examined in detail with the help of visual materials.

Students who have completed the undergraduate program in Protohistory and Near Eastern Archeology can apply for master’s and doctoral programs at graduate level and continue their education towards specialization.

The students have the opportunity to support the education they have taken by participating in the excavations and researches of various periods which are carried out by the faculty members as well as the theoretical courses which are obligatory to attend. The results of the excavations and researches carried out by our branch of science, the burials of material and the findings of the material cultural remains, documented with small finds, make important contributions to the civilizations and cultures of the Near East.
